Q&A Summary

Question Answer(s)
to the entire IBD International Team Live from Minneapolis – Good Morning !!! Hi Scott! GM to you too! Hat Man Dave Saito-Chung
Gm I hope I get lucky to have answered my questions. Can you talk about Gilead and vaxart and srne? Thx a lot Hi Ileana, Hat Man Dave here. I traded SRNE very briefly on the cup w/ handle breakout past an 8.67 entry on July 31, but it was more a “Go to Vegas, play craps” trade. I got out when it fell extremely hard on Aug. 11. Extremely speculative name, even though Sorrento has some innovative new technology for Covid testing. We want stocks to trade at least $10 a share before considering them. Then the average dollar volume may be ample so that none of us on IBD Live are going to impact the price! GILD: a laggard now — Composite Rating, 41 EPS, 17 Relative Strength — none of these are in the range of what the best growth stocks tend to be before they break out. Best to focus time, effort and money into those truly showing strength, forming good bases and leading the market higher. These (Investor’s Corners may help, too. Cheers, Dave — https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/the-ibd-composite-rating/ and https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/investor-basics-why-learning-base-
AAWW, FDX or UPS? Would you please compare them? Which is stronger? We were looking at AAWW as it pulled back to the 10-week line a little over a month ago and saw a nice rebound from that level.
when would be a good time to exit market before the election? We’re following the market’s lead. Make sure to watch this show every day for the next two weeks as we update the audience about market conditions and our outlook!
Happy Monday! Happy Monday, everyone!
Good Morning from the Carolina Shore. GM David! David ‘Hat Man’ and most of the team from the California shore.
Good morning! Is anyone going to sell any of their TSLA shares leading to earnings? I’m holding unless any MA lines are violated. We’re still keeping an eye on that 10-week line. It’s been a tremendous level of support during this run!
Good morning. May we review the high tight flag pattern of ZM? Where would be the proper buy point? Thank you, When it cleared 529.84 on 10/15
can you take a look at DDOG? looks very extended ..ty Yeah it’s extended from its last proper entry but looking good for those who own it
How many stock will you own that do not make money? Where do I find the 52 week high low number? If you look at a weekly chart on MarketSmith, you can see how far a stock is from its 52-week high as well as the 52-week high and low — upper right corner below current price/% gain or loss.
last Monday Charles Harris bought TSLA as it broke out. Did he hold that buy or sell? live answered
Justin…you look 10 years younger, ha Thanks! That’s my fountain of youth strategy
Welcome back Jason! Thanks, Ronald.
Is there an IBD site where ‘Investors-Corner’ content is listed more concisely than at https://www.investors.com/category/how-to-invest/investors-corner/? (I’d like to review a couple of years of IC subject listings. Hopefully the content ages well.) Yes, that is the acccurate listing page — https://www.investors.com/category/how-to-invest/investors-corner/ If you just bookmark it on your browser, you won’t need to type it in or navigate to it from the investors.com home page, you can just click the link from the bookmark/favorites list!
Could you comment on the Podcast Ep. 79: David Ryan: These Key Signals Tell You When A Leading Stock’s Run Is Over. Is the market in general had too big a run? He suggests cash until after earnings and the election, if I am hearing him correctly. He came on the podcast in the thick of September’s market weakness, and overall conditions have since improved
what to do with Shop at present before earnings. thank you live answered
could not find the IBD live faq Investors.com/LiveFAQ
good morning Hat Man GM Suresh! Thanks much for joining us. Hat
Please look at GRWG….huge earnings and sales growth You are right, Robert. On a daily chart, looks like a decent handle is forming, too — https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/the-basics-spot-traits-of-proper-handles-on-cup-patterns/
Justin you look 10 years younger minus the facial hair! lol It’s the lack of gray
4 clean cut guys today thanks to Justin. Trying to fit in.

GM team, you mentioned ZM, would you see if SEDG is also a high tight flag? Hi Ronil, great Q. SEDG unfortunately did not rise 100% over a period of 4 to 8 weeks. So it did not produce the flag pole first. But the tight trading has the look and feel of a shelf. This IC explains all about this unique pattern. Cheers, Hat Man Dave — https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/what-is-a-shelf-pattern-and-why-it-is-perfect-pyramiding-tool-in-growth-stocks/
Hi guys, studying the past elections, observe that the last two weeks before the elections, the stock market falls. It would be good to take a defensive strategy now, like sale all and wait? We are following the market’s lead — not where we want it to go or think it will go. Right now, action looks healthy. But that could change, so that’s why it’s important to remain flexible
hello – can you please comment on amzn live answered
MarketSmith question. Could someone explain the Sponsorship Rating and how it relates to Mutual Fund ownership. Thanks. Not sure what Irusha and Scott think about it lately, but on this show we do often look at the top-rated mutual funds that own a stock. If one from the IBD Mutual Fund index, or an A-rated fund or two, own, that gives us confidence.
Nintendo was mentioned on Friday. Is that tradeable? Would that be on part of an ETF like HERO? Thank You Irusha said he was adding it on the pullback to the 10-week. It’s a big part of the HERO ETF, with a weight of 6.4% as of 10/16, right behind SE and NVDA which are the fund’s top two holdings at the moment. All this info can be found here https://www.globalxetfs.com/funds/hero/
I am interested in initiate a position for Shopify, somedhow it is stage 8 C&H and RS line is a kind of flat. What do you think? Great point on the base stage; on SHOP we have said a few times on past shows that it arguably reset the base count in 2H of 2018, when it moved sideways for more than seven months. Also, I see that in July 2018, SHOP tried to break out of a flawed cup, failed, then undercut the 140.40 low of that faulty five week base. This, to me, reset the count to zero. First day on the “Live” platform. Long time trader- can you please share how the group trades around earnings? Welcome, Dale! We have a few strategies for earnings — first, we want to be buying stocks at proper entires/setups so before earnings. We like making sure we have enough cushion heading into a report. If you don’t, we like focusing on stocks with stong fundamentals setting up into earnings, and then see if it becomes actionable with a breakout after results come out. We also have an earnings strategy using options — the details on that and more info about the show linked over at investors.com/LiveFAQ!
ZM – have a position in this. Concern with it’s rising too fast? Alternately, when would be a point to add on (a bit)? Feels extended now to be adding. Broke out of a high-tight flag last thursday, which is a proper entry. Those can be extremely powerful patterns, so for now, wouldn’t be *too* concerned to see it rising from that level. We’ll keep an eye on it to make sure it’s not going too vertical. Doesn’t have that look to it yet
Good Morning All..Hope you are all well….CRSR got a price hike and up early….Thoughts? Thanks live answered
Does IBD’s “Stocks under $10” or “Stocks under $5” list/service still exist? I believe we’re transitioning away from that. To be honest, we like fishing in the pond of stocks above $20. It’s key to focus on quality
Would you please discuss JKS? Really incredible move from 24. Way too extended here from a proper entry. We like the TAN ETF as a way to play the solar group, it’s been trading tightly for the last little bit, would wait for a proper entry
Can we talk about TEAM? It broke out last Friday. Yes nice move Friday for sure. The base was looking a bit sloppy compared with its peers before that move
Good morning. How should investors prepare for the election? Any measures to protect our portfolios from potential dives/fluctuations? I reccomend going to the IBD Live FAQ page and scrolling down to the portfolio management section. It’s an overview on how we do portfolio management. It’s not specifically about the election but you can apply many of these concepts to the election and your investing. Hope it helps! https://www.investors.com/research/ibd-live-faq-helpful-links-answers-to-questions-about-zoom-charts-ibds-methodology-more/
Please include PKI in todays discussion……. Nice support at the 50-day last week
Is a 2 to 3 week handle too long? The handle alone needs at least five days to form, but it could go on for weeks. Make sure it doesn’t exceed the cup portion in time or size of decline.
Thanks Ali- I see your answers to the election question. Awesome — thanks, Broto!
CRSR is amping up – Irusha mentioned it Friday. live answered
How far above the 50 day MA qualifies for an extended price, and too high to buy? We like to see a stock within 10% or so of its 10-week line, ideally. Sometimes it’s also the look of a stock chart rather than just the numbers that we analyze to determine whether it’s extended or not
JASON. for your personal account what is your minimum dollar volume liquidity? For both the firm and PA I almost never trade anything under $100M ADV at a minimum. Usually use $200-$300M at a minimum .
What is the status of the power trend? By my count, it should be on. It would have turned on Friday had it been a positive day.
Where is the buy point on a cup with handle pattern? The classic buy is 10 cents above the high of the handle.
GM, noticed i typed over symbol on megaphone top question…symbol EXPI Extended from an entry at 46.68

Is the pink line on marketsmith chart a 10 DMA or 10 EMA? 10-day SMA. Check out investors.com/LiveFAQ for details on all the moving averages we use for different time frames
TEAM broke out on nice volume Friday. Has great sponsorship and earnings in 10 days. Your thought on adding here appreciated. Good eye, Steven, the new breakout is gaining force; watch how the RS line acts to.
Hi, Update on Apple stock please Alissa. Thanks Like many other top stocks, it looks like it’s forming a handle which is constructive. And finding support at the 10-week. We like using rebounds off the 10-week and handle breakouts as buying opportunities
How does Jason handle earnings- example for SHOP- Jason said the earning report may give oppurtunity to ADD SHARES- if you are in SHOP, that means he is holding looking to add and will not dump the stock and wait to see after earning to get back in? He’s been holding it for a while so has a very low cost basis and a huge profit cushion
Jason, how far below the 50 day do you buy? usually within +/- 5%.
Not seeing charts Hey Kam, that’s strange — maybe try leaving the meeting and jumping back in? I’m remote and able to see the charts
GM All – thanks as always for all of the tremendous research of this team. Jason – could you please compare PayPal to Square? I own Square but not PayPal, thinking that Square was the leader in this space. Whaddya think? PYPL has stronger fundamentals than SQ — poor bottom-line numbers from the latter in the last two quarters. But a strong performer no doubt
Jason: Would you initiate a new postion on the stocks you discussed if they gap up at earnings? usually won’t start a new position, but I will slightly add.
How does Jason’s strategy work, buying BELOW the 50 dma? He’s playing with big money, so it’s not easy to build a real position on the breakout.
Good morning. Any chance Jason could share more about a buyable gapup? Any specific characteristics of buyable vs not buyable? Thanks I usually won’t start a position on a buyable gap up, but I will slightly add. I look at buyable gap ups that are do to fundamental reasons. I.e., earnings event
Jason- How do you determine you overall account portfolio exposure if you keep adding as price goes your way? It’s build into my mandate and deals with max position sizes.
Taking into account that the FAAANG´s are reporting in ten days and they are close to breaking out bases, do you keep or reduce your hypothetical positions? It depends on where your entries were and how much cushion you have
how would you treat TSLA going into earnings? live answered
Jason do you have a view or position in ISRG? great company, no position or current view.
I got stopped out on profit target on CRSR. I thing I will enter again some time soon. What do you think of this stock? It gapped up today. live answered
Is it better for stocks to have shakeout or no shakeout but high RS before breaking out? Interesting question — ideally we like seeing both! And RS line is more important than RS rating, but a lot of times you’ll see them go hand in hand.
In a handle, what is the acceptable percentage range over at least the five days? This article page tells you everything you need to know about cup-with-handle bases, including the specs of the handle. Ideal depth is 10-12% and should form in the upper half of the base https://www.investors.com/ibd-university/how-to-buy/common-patterns-1/ links with more details on all our chart patterns over at investors.com/LiveFAQ
what about BYND. It is down but still on the Leaders List The pullback looks pretty orderly to me — light volume. It’s still above the 21-day line
On SHOP pattern recognition is showing this is showing stage 8 base. Does that seem too extented or any comments on that? It is a later stage base I agree.
gap in CRSR, thoughts live answered
GM from Cape Cod…..$RDFN is bouncing off 50 day this morning Let’s see if it can find support here like it did in September!
is NIO showing signs of an ascending base? 10/14 would have been the day to get in, which we talked about that day on the show as it was happening. Extended now
What is the pink trend line on charts? 10-day SMA — checkout invesstors.com/LiveFAQ for the details on all the moving averages we use for different time frames
Is TWLO a stock you think should be a “take your 20-25% gain and go” or do you have conviction it could really be a leader and go much further? Really interesting fundamental story with TWLO, in my view
Good morning. CRSR? Buyable here? live answered
who is Jason? I am a Portfolio Manager at O’Neil Capital Management
Please introduce Jason. I don’t know who he is. We introduced him at the beginning of the show portfolio manager at O’Neil Capital Management
Which list column display would best reflect liquidity as just discussed? Here’s an article with all the details, it’s linked on our FAQ page at investors.com/LiveFAQ — https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/stock-trading-know-these-3-basics-about-a-stocks-trading-volume/
Any thoughts on DPZ a former favorite. Not necessarily broken here, but not encouraging to see a gap-down on the last earnings report
Lastly, way too early but QQQ Investco has a new junior QQQJ Yeah I’d wait until it has more trading history to see how it trades
CRSR? live answered
Did Jason and Justin mean 100M float as the minimum for consideration for institution trading typically? My database shows NVDA trades10M/share a day on average. 100M float turns out to the lower end of large cap stocks (S&P500). $100M average daily dollar volume.
ARRY !!!!!!!! Need to wait for a proper IPO base before buying. We have an article linked at investors.com/LiveFAQ with details on what we look for with IPOs
et cetera not eck cetera. thx I know I hate when I do this…hard wired in, no idea why. Thanks!
please take a look at DKNG You never want to see a double-digit gain turn into a loss, and this stock has round-tripped all of its gains from the consolidation breakout. Plus, it’s now below the 50-day/10-week. Both of those things indicate it’s a sell, if you haven’t sold already
DKNG ,please.ty You never want to see a double-digit gain turn into a loss, and this stock has round-tripped all of its gains from the consolidation breakout. Plus, it’s now below the 50-day/10-week. Both of those things indicate it’s a sell, if you haven’t sold already
WHAT IS etf IRUSHA TALKING ABOUT XOUT
What was the symbol name of that 250 growth ETF? Not growth 250 but interesting concept, the guy Irusha was talking about was on our podcast last week — check it out at investors.com/podcast. The ETF is called XOUT
What are the expectations of a high tight flag? this article is linked over at investors.com/LiveFAQ, has all the details! https://www.investors.com/how-to-invest/investors-corner/breakout-stocks-tesla-stock-rally-high-tight-flag-base/
Jason – Regarding your position on PYPL, what are your views on SQ with higher growth, CEO, lower market cap thus more room to grow, doesnt it have higher odds of outperforming PYPL? Two kind of not fully overlapping in many areas so i’ve traded both I like both and think you can own both in a growth portfolio
so everyone sounds pretty positive on the market with many players setting up with handles etc. How do you feel the weeks coming to the election will play out? What is your idea on a Trump win vs a Biden win as it relates to market movement in the short term (before end of year) and into 2021? We always like to say, we’re in the interpretation business, not the prediction business when it comes to market action. We’re following the market’s lead and staying flexible.
DDOG has been dropping for 4 days. Would you please review? thank you. normal volatility
So Jason, who do you think is the leader in the space of WDAY? If you already addressed this, I am sorry. I would classify WDAY as owning software exposure – so CRWD, NET, DDOG are all stocks that I like over WDAY.
Can you please state the leaders in the different sectors you own Jason? I manage a long biased portfolio that concentrates in tech and healthcare
Can we checkout dada trying to show strength on a strong reversal live answered
Irusha: FYI – like the Nasdaq news feature better than Yahoo news. Thanks for the upgrade! good to hear Blaine. Thanks for letting me know.
How does Jason identify market leaders? Our founder Bill O’Neil developed 7 key traits that help determine market leaders — https://www.investors.com/ibd-university/can-slim/ check out investors.com/LiveFAQ for more resources
staa Nice breakout today, though I would note the RS line is still off highs, the fundamentals have weakened in the last few quarters, and there wasn’t a handle shakeout before this breakout
GOOD MORNING: COULD YOU TALK ABOUT CRSR PLEASE THANK YOU We reviewed earlier — Irusha has a position
What time are SNAP’s earnings tomorrow? after the close.
If Jason is a bottoms up investor, what are his sell rules? What is his ballpark estimated average hold time? live answered
Does Jason manage hedge fund? Mutual fund? Portfolio manager with O’Neil Capital Management
Thanks Jason for your sound guidance and rational approach. You are a great asset to this webcast because you are sharing ways to separate the critical nuggets from the noise of the markets. Love it!! Thanks, David. Glad to talk with everyone.
Jason, do you sell some before earnings in case there is a bad earnings report? Depends on multiple variables so tough to answer in one question.
Allison, thanks for answering my question- one thing you might want to mention to the listeners is that, on zoom, we see “all questions” on the Q&A box, and a seperate tab entitled “My questions.” It is misleading b/c “all questions” are truly not “all questions” asjed; rather it’s just the questions that are answered. So if one asks a question that is not answered, it looks as if all the questions are answered except that listener’s question. Which causes one to wonder if your team is getting the question. Just a thought Thanks, Louis! Yes, we try to explain this when we get the chance. You’re right, we’d love to answer every Q but there’s only a handful of us and hundreds of questions each session!
Jason, are you inclined to sell your positions before the election or are you going to hold? I will monitor my exposure levels carefully around the election, but it’s not a main deciding factor.
Oh Ali! So what are your personal thoughts then? Ha! Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best?? Ed and I actually discussed this topic on the most recent episode of Investing Strategies — you can check it out here if you’d like when you get a chance! https://www.investors.com/videos/election-2020-how-to-handle-your-portfolio-amid-market-moving-headlines/
love you the different styles. I’m a stay-at-home mom learning so much from all of you!! Thank you, thank you. Thanks so much, Kay!
what if you’re down on TSLA? We typically like having a decent profit cushion heading into earnings since they can be such a crap shoot sometimes
Comment on FVRR? An incredibly strong stock, and just turned profitable last quarter. Rebounded off the 10-week line on two separate occasions in Sept, those proved to be great buying opportunities. Quite extended now
